Today’s Literary Birthday
American novelist Norman Mailer was born on this day in 1923. Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead, based on his experiences in World War II, was chosen as “one of the hundred best novels in English” by the Modern Library Association. His Pulitzer Prize winning Executioner’s Song was one of the first examples of narrative non-fiction. He also won a Pulitzer and a National Book Award for Armies of the Night which, along with his Miami and the Siege of Chicago, is a foundation of the “new journalism.” With Dan Wolf and Ed Fancher he founded The Village Voice in 1955.
