“Memoirs are the backstairs of history.”
Today’s Literary Birthday
English writer A.A. Milne was born on this day in 1882. Milne wrote for the humor magazine Punch and produced 18 plays and three novels before publishing a 1925 collection of short stories titled a Gallery of Children which became the first of his Winnie-the-Pooh stories. With the publication of the Pooh stories, Milne’s children’s stories eclipsed his writings in other genres. In his Autobiography he observed, “…what an obsession with me children have become.”
