    Today’s Literary Birthday
    American writer Alice Walker was born on this day in 1944. Her books have focused on the struggles of African-American women against racism, sexism and violence. Walker has been an activist in many civil rights and feminist causes. She won a National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Color Purple. Her short story Kindred Spirits won an O’Henry Award.
