    Today’s Literary Birthday
    American novelist, essayist and social critic William Burroughs was born on this day in 1914. A close friend of Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, Burroughs was an avant-garde author and member of the Beat Generation who had an impact on both popular culture and literature. He was prosecuted for obscenity in Massachusetts following publication of his novel Naked Lunch. Burroughs was acquitted. It was the last obscenity trial against a work of literature in America.
