Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison was born on this day in 1931. Her novels include Sula, The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon and Beloved which won the Pulitzer Prize. Her Nobel Prize citation reads: Toni Morrison, "who in novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality."
American novelist Wallace Stegner who won a Pulitzer Prize for The Angle of Repose and a National Book Award for The Spectator Bird was born on this day in 1909. Sometimes called the “dean of Western Writers” Stegner also wrote Big Rock Candy Mountain and Crossing to Safety. He also authored the autobiographical Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs.
