    British author Iain Banks who write both mainstream and science fiction novels was born on this day in 1954. His mainstream novels include The Bridge, Canal Dreams, A Stone Song and Transition. Banks science fiction series focusing on a galactic civilization called “The Culture” include The Player of Games, Excession, and Matter. Banks once said, “I write because I love it, I enjoy it…and I can make a living from it: beats a day job.”
