Judy Blume, the writer of books for children and young adults, was born on this day in 1938. Blume’s books have sold 80 million copies and are published in 31 languages. She is known for taking on controversial subjects like racism, menstruation, divorce, bullying, masturbation and teen sex in books like Are You There God? This is Margaret, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, and Blubber. Because of the nature of her themes, Blume has often been a target of would be censors. Her book, Forever, was the most frequently challenged book of 2005. Blume has won a Margaret A Edwards from the American Library Association and has been recognized as a Living Legend by the Library of Congress.
