    Today’s Literary Birthday
    Italian medievalist, philosopher and novelist Umberto Eco was born on this day in 1932. His best known book is The Name of the Rose, a medieval historical mystery. He also wrote Foucault’s Pendulum and The Island of the Day Before. In a 2005 Prospect magazine worldwide poll, Eco was ranked second among the world’s top intellectuals.
