Today's Literary Birthday

The chronicle of adolescent angst was somewhat autobiographical. Salinger said, “…it was a great relief telling people about it.” Poet and critic Ian Hamilton said of Catcher, which has sold 65 million copies to date, it, “became the book all brooding adolescents had to buy, the indispensable manual from which cool styles of disaffection could be borrowed.” The book became the “most censored” and second most often taught in high schools of any American novel.
